I’ve been chasing the scent of Black Tea for more than a decade of my Perfumery Career.  And since I drink it every day, I know it well.  I tried making my own extractions of real tea.  What a disaster.  And the Absolutes are so expensive, so dank and opaque, and not really that strong, anyway.  I wanted to have enough strength in a Black Tea base, that it could stand up and boss around the rest of the scent, if it needed to do so.  If you know me, you know that I am not a minimalist, and that I like complexity, a full and natural -ness, and realism combined. This base portrays many of the scented aspects of these two teas, realistically.  Way too many Tea bases are just fantasy things, with no relationship to realism or reality.  Too many of the Tea bases have all the options pinned down, and you have no creativity left to insert.

But I didn’t want to dictate the end result of your perfume, or your idea of “Tea”.  I had to give structure, direction, and strength, but leave the total image up to your creative and redirective capability.  It can easily be reshaped to Earl Grey, to Constant Comment, to Chai tea, and to all the styles of “Tea”, by pushing it around and redirecting it to your fancy.  You could push it to White Tea, but making it into Green Tea?  That could be difficult.  (I made myself a different Green Tea base, instead.)

I just couldn’t come up with a catchy cute nickname for this base though… LOL!

    I am a big fan of black tea. I have been purchasing the Natural Black Tea (Robertet) from PSH and it’s on point. I too have been trying to make black tea accords for some time and failing at it. I decided I would take the plunge and buy one from a pro, Paul Kiler. Alas… this has yielded similar results to my accords. This smells like Methyl Anthranilate, grape juice, nothing more. I hate to say it, but this is disappointing. I get Mr. Bubble bath bubble soap but no tea. Two stars for super fruity grape soap. If you’re looking for clean and fruity this is a great buy and a great scent, it’s just not black tea.

    I won’t give my own product a star to pad the ratings, but I wanted to respond to Dutch’s comment about the Black tea base being nothing more than methyl anthranilate. The dosage of methyl anthranilate in this base is 1.55%. I am sorry that Dutch is disappointed with this base. “Tea” can be many things to many people and many cultures. As for the subject of “Soap”, that can be both experiential and cultural, and so defining what is and isn’t soapy is a bit nebulous, but Linalool being in Lavender, maybe that is the association going here, as there is some linalool and linalool oxide, combined with clary sage eo, another source of linalool, in this base. If one consults GCMS results from Teas, you will find both Methyl anthranilate and Linalool in those results.
    I do hope that other people will be delighted by this base. It took me several years to work it out.

    I have to agree with another review for this Beautiful Black Tea base. I do get the “grape juice”. And it is very “sweet”. I as well don’t get a black tea fragrance. It may usable in other ways – greatly softened and diluted. The sweet grape can become overwhelming.

    An outstanding tea base. When evaluated neat, I also observed the “grape” facet. However, when diluted to 10%, that does not appear, and I instead apprehend a realistic black tea note.

    This is a lovely base and great for adding lift and depth to any perfume with woody, tea, earthy and berry notes.
