The odor of Geosmin is best described as the smell of the air after rain falls on dry soil.
Human’s can smell concentrations as low as 10 parts per trillion of Geosmin in water. The characteristic odor of soil was first investigated by Berthelot in 1891. In 1965 the structure of the responsible compound geosmin was determined by Gerber. It was not until 1981 that the pathways for the biosynthesis of these compounds determined.*

YES!!!! it IS the smell of the air after the rain. Go easy on this one. Even 1% dilution will flatten your composition if you are not careful. Beautiful aroma chemical.

Yes, it’s just as described. A rain/soil/ozonic odor. I find that the 1% is very workable, and haven’t had any problems with overdosing personally. This leads me to believe I need to buy a larger quantity for further experimentation. 😀

Not only is this a fantastic rainy air element, but it works wonders for freshening up scents that need to feel livelier and more natural; it’s like opening a window up to fresh air in a composition. The 1% seems to be a nice workable concentration.

I once left some boxes of clothes in my boyfriend’s basement for a summer, and this is the exact smell they acquired! This is potentially wonderful, and the earthy aspect is definitely there, but it also has an alternate interpretation as something funky and fungal. I would be cautious using it with anything indole or animalic.

Definitely the smell of rain, I love using this in my diffuser. Very strong, using too much can easily change it from a lighter and rain smelling scent into something that feels a lot deeper. Experimentation and care should be used. I am planning on throwing in some 2-methylisoborneol as mentioned in another listing to see if I can get closer to the smell of rain on a hot summer day.

Geosmin is a critical component in an accurate Petrichor accord, but it is difficult to find, as there are not a great deal of companies that carry it. Being able to get it pre-diluted in DPG at 1% is so convenient, as well, since Geosmin has such a tenacious odor profile. This really simplifies the process, making the steps from purchase of ingredients to fragrance composition fewer and further between. Thanks for such quality products!
