What an extraordinary product! Initially it is a blast of goat’s hair then wet dog then oily human hair. Really I must congratulate IFF on such a well made synthetic. Adds a nice interesting vintage touch to orientals.

I’m quite fond of this one. Distilled costus oil isn’t the easiest material to obtain, and no matter where you source it, it comes at a fairly steep price. One could easily use this as a 1:1 replacer, and you’d be quite pleased, at that. Personally, I like to use it as a ”costus extender”, by adding small doses (usually less than 0.5%) to compositions where I want the costus oil to stand out. This seems to envelop the costus and work to elevate and extend it with this homogenous stratification effect, while, as an added benefit, allows you to use less costus oil, while still achieving the desired highlight.

Used as a replacer, it does much of what natural costus does, only a bit more muted, cleaned up a touch, and alone, it sits lower in the EQ. It has that same goaty (not creamy, sheepy lanolin, but more of a dank, dusty, sort of unwashed scalp sort of animalicism), with an almost nitromusk-like fashion. That same velvet-soft penetrating “whiteness” and cosmetic thickness that you can almost *feel*, a la musk ambrette. A little powdery, a little oily, a little dirty, a little musky.

It’s not a punchy or revolting material in the slightest. Its easy to use, so long as you don’t overdose and flatten with it. If you’re curious about costus oil, but can’t afford or source it, or if you just want something to exalt your existing costus, this is probably the one and only material you’ll need. Very economically-priced, as well.
