It’s been a while since I used up my last real cananga essential oil. Despite its low price tag, this material isn’t offered very often – at least not for hobbyists. So, I’m glad I got some natural cananga essential oil from PSH! – The overall scent is more green, (eugenol-)spicy and somehow ‘edgy’ compared to Ylang III or complete oils. To my knowledge, the main difference between Ylang oils and cananga oil lies in the different treatment of the flowers (maybe even some leaves), which are crushed and treated with less care for cananga oil distillation. Cananga oil is likely produced by distillation of whole (crushed) flowering twigs/branches rather than hand-picked flowers. – However, don’t be fooled by the low price. Cananga oil is quite unique in its own right and shouldn’t be regarded as cheap Ylang substitute IMO.

This is a great Cananga/Ylang product that is subdued green and perhaps a bit masculine compared to other products. It reminds me a lot of Ylang III, but it is even less cloying and a bit linear. It’s exactly what I need for a masculine fragrance that I’m working on. I’ve been looking for years for just the right ylang that doesn’t push it into too much of a female gendered territory and this Cananga gives it a perfect unisex balance.
